Children’s oral health
Building a good brushing routine takes time. These practical ideas can help Cold Lake parents and caregivers make oral care feel familiar, calm and manageable.

Start with a routine children can predict
Choose two consistent times each day, including brushing before bed. A short song, timer or simple checklist can help children know what comes next.
Young children learn by watching. Brushing together can make the routine feel normal while giving you a chance to model slow, careful cleaning.
Use a gentle, age-appropriate technique
Use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush that fits comfortably in your child’s mouth. Angle the bristles toward the gumline and use gentle circles rather than scrubbing.
Brush the outside, inside and chewing surface of every tooth. When neighbouring teeth touch, clean between them daily with floss or another tool recommended by your dental team.
Match adult help to your child’s age and ability
Children need hands-on help until they have the coordination to reach every surface well. Even after they begin brushing independently, an adult should check and finish any missed areas.
For children under three, ask an oral health professional whether fluoridated toothpaste is recommended based on cavity risk. If it is, use only a rice-grain-sized amount. Children ages three to six should use a pea-sized amount and have adult assistance.
Keep the experience positive
Let your child choose between two suitable toothbrushes or toothpastes, and praise the effort rather than expecting a perfect brushing session. If brushing is consistently painful or difficult, ask your dental team for ideas tailored to your child.
Regular dental visits also give families a chance to review technique, fluoride needs and changes in a child’s mouth. Lake Centre Dental Group welcomes children and families from Cold Lake, Bonnyville and nearby Lakeland communities.
Clinical note
General education only. A dentist or other qualified health professional can recommend fluoride use and home-care techniques based on your child’s individual needs.
