A more comfortable approach to dental treatment
Feeling nervous about an upcoming dental procedure? IV sedation may help eligible patients feel more relaxed and comfortable while receiving certain types of dental care.
At Lake Centre Dental Group, we understand that dental anxiety and the thought of a longer or more involved treatment can feel overwhelming. We offer IV sedation as an option for patients whose medical history, planned procedure and individual needs make it appropriate.
What is IV sedation?
IV sedation (intravenous sedation) involves administering medication through a small IV line, typically placed in an arm or hand. The medication helps reduce anxiety and awareness during treatment. Many patients feel very sleepy and relaxed, and some remember little of the appointment afterward. Experiences vary, and memory loss is not guaranteed.
IV sedation can produce different levels of drowsiness and awareness. Your dental team will explain the intended level of sedation and monitor you throughout treatment.
Who might benefit?
IV sedation may be considered for eligible patients who:
- Feel significant anxiety about dental treatment
- Are having certain extractions, oral surgery or other involved procedures
- Expect a longer appointment and may find it difficult to remain comfortable
- Have a sensitive gag reflex that makes some treatments challenging
Not every procedure or patient is suitable for IV sedation. An individual clinical assessment is required, and your dental team will explain the available options.
What to expect
- Before your appointment. Your dental team will review your health history, medications and treatment plan. You will receive instructions about eating and drinking, medications and arranging an adult to take you home. Follow the instructions provided specifically for you.
- During your treatment. Sedation medication is given through the IV. Your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, blood pressure and level of sedation are monitored as appropriate throughout the procedure. Your experience and responsiveness will depend on the medication and intended level of sedation.
- After your appointment. You will be monitored during recovery and discharged when you meet the appropriate criteria. A responsible adult must accompany you home. Follow your written aftercare guidance, including restrictions on driving and other activities while sedation effects remain.
Safety and individual assessment
IV sedation involves potential risks and side effects, and it is not suitable for everyone. Your dentist will discuss your medical history, medications, the planned treatment, possible risks, benefits and alternatives before you decide whether to proceed. Sedation is delivered and monitored by appropriately authorized dental professionals in accordance with applicable Alberta requirements.
